STUDENTS TASKED ON SOCIAL NETWORKS – DR. USMAN

A university don, Dr. Usman Muhammad has called on students of tertiary institutions across the country to make use of social networks for academic research and resource sharing instead of using them to commit social vices.


Dr. Usman, a lecturer with the department of political science university of Abuja, gave this advice while presenting a paper titled, “ The Role of Mass Media in Contemporary World”at the macosa day of bayero university kano which took place at  Musa Abdullahi Auditorium new site.

 According to him, students can only deviate from the evils of social networks if they use them for research work that will enhance their knowledge.
The university don maintained that the advent of social networks has impacted negatively in the lives of students urging them to use them wisely.


While speaking on the role of journalists,Dr. Bala added that media practitioners owed the society a great responsibility of defending their right and fighting the course of justice.
He maintained that as the fourth estate of realm, journalist should help in reshaping the attitude of individuals stressing the need for them to always adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession.


On his part, a one-time lecturer of mass communication, Dr. Bala Muhammad dwelled extensively on the declining state of media organization especially in northern Nigeria which he said is unhealthy for the development of the country.

Also speaking, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu advised journalist to always ensure objectivity in their reportage and serve as a means of uniting the people instead of bringing disaffection.   

MACOSA TO CONDUCT ELECTION SOON

The coordinator mass communication student association Bayero University Kano Malam Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi said the department has concluded arrangements to conduct election which will usher in new leadership that will pilot the affairs of the association.

He disclosed this while answering question from journalists shortly after the MACOSA day which took place at Musa Abdullahi Auditorium new site.

Malam Kurfi who could not mention the specific date for the election, expressed optimism that in no distant time the election will hold.

According to him, the association has existed for sometime without democratically elected leaders due to some lapses observed which have been resolved.

The MACOSA day organized by students of Mass Communication Department Bayero University Kano was to expose the public to the trends of journalism practice.

It is believed to be an avenue where potential journalists will meet with scholars in the field of mass communication to chat the way forward for the journalism and how their skills could be improved upon.


The event can be seen as formidable platform that will serve as a breeding ground and address the challenges that students of mass communication are faced with before and after graduation.

Speakers who presented papers at the occasion were able to bring to the fore some salient issues which could help students excel in their quest to meet the yearning and aspiration of the society.


Some of the key issues raised were objectivity, career opportunities, research work, commitment to academic activities, reading culture among others which are considered to be the way out for unprofessionalism in the field of journalism. 


Dr. Bala Muhammad, in his paper titled “Knock Only Once and the opportunity will be there for graduates of Mass Communication”, clearly shows the length at which the society needs the media for its survival. 


In his paper titled “The Role of Mass Media in Contemporary World”,Dr. Usman Muhammad of University of Abuja    x-rayed the less objectivity of the western media biased reportage and highlighted the pros and cons of social networks.


This is why the coordinator of MACOSA Malam Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi said the event was part of the efforts of the department towards ensuring efficiency in students’ performance.
Other participants at the event who spoke to our correspondents are Malam Nura Ibrahim, Dorathy Decker and Mallam Haruna Isma’il expressed optimism that the event will enhance the knowledge of the students. 


The participants further urged the students to make optimal use of the knowledge gained in improving their skills.


The public lecture organized to mark the MACOSA day for the year 2011, drew scholars from various institutions of higher learning across the country.

KANO STATE GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT MASS COMMUNICATION DEPARTMENT

Kano State Government says it will continue to render support and assistance to the Department of Mass Communication Bayero University Kano. 

This was disclosed by the state commissioner for information Dr. Umar Farouk Jibril at a public lecture organized by Mass Communication Students Association of Bayero University Kano to mark its day.

According to the commissioner, mass communication department of the university which has  graduated journalists of outstanding quality, it considered to be one of the best mass communication departments in the whole federation and as such, deserve the support and assistance of the state government. 

While commending the management of the department for sustaining the production of the departmental publication, “The Beacon and Explorer”, said the university is known for its outstanding qualities calling on them to ensure its sustenance for the overall development of Journalism.

The commissioner who is the former Head of the Department   also urged students of the institution to be committed to their studies and shun acts capable of destroying their future.
