The MACOSA day organized by students of Mass Communication Department Bayero University Kano was to expose the public to the trends of journalism practice.
It is believed to be an avenue where potential journalists will meet with scholars in the field of mass communication to chat the way forward for the journalism and how their skills could be improved upon.
The event can be seen as formidable platform that will serve as a breeding ground and address the challenges that students of mass communication are faced with before and after graduation.

Speakers who presented papers at the occasion were able to bring to the fore some salient issues which could help students excel in their quest to meet the yearning and aspiration of the society.
Some of the key issues raised were objectivity, career opportunities, research work, commitment to academic activities, reading culture among others which are considered to be the way out for unprofessionalism in the field of journalism.
Dr. Bala Muhammad, in his paper titled “Knock Only Once and the opportunity will be there for graduates of Mass Communication”, clearly shows the length at which the society needs the media for its survival.
In his paper titled “The Role of Mass Media in Contemporary World”,Dr. Usman Muhammad of University of Abuja x-rayed the less objectivity of the western media biased reportage and highlighted the pros and cons of social networks.
This is why the coordinator of MACOSA Malam Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi said the event was part of the efforts of the department towards ensuring efficiency in students’ performance.
Other participants at the event who spoke to our correspondents are Malam Nura Ibrahim, Dorathy Decker and Mallam Haruna Isma’il expressed optimism that the event will enhance the knowledge of the students.
The participants further urged the students to make optimal use of the knowledge gained in improving their skills.
The public lecture organized to mark the MACOSA day for the year 2011, drew scholars from various institutions of higher learning across the country.
It was a mind blowing public lecture for students and practitioners of the 'pen-pushing' profession. In fact, the worst that could have happened to a communicator was to miss the lecture. kudos to the organisers of the event.
