There are places in Kano where you can go and forget the busy life of
the city. Audu Bako Zoological Garden is one of few. The Environment of
the Zoo is covered in green with beautiful tall trees and a cool
Atmosphere. It is a home of different animals, birds and reptiles. With
58 different species consisting of over 300 animals. The zoo is owned
and controlled by the government of Kano state. It was established
around 1967 to 1975 by then governor Kano state Alhaji Audu Bako which
whom the zoo was named after him.
A resident veterinary doctor is always busy there moving around to
prevent diseases and treat the animals on sick bed. However, preventions
are on the line to make the environment conducive for the animals
living there. Employed workers make some efforts to prevent the animals
from diseases such as fumigation, to take care of the parasites on the
grasses and the soil.
Some visible animals and bird include:lions,zebra,hyena,giraffe,parrot,geese,ducks,snakes,crocodile,elephant,pig sand monkeys.
One
visitor Alhaji Musa knows and love them all. ''I cant just say one
animal is most important or interesting, i think all the animals are
interesting''.
The zoo welcomed students from nursery to universities level as visitors
on excursion. Also students from research institutions went there to
conduct there researches, while some categories of people just go
pleasure and fun. The zoo counts a large number of visitors during the
seasonal celebrities such as sallah festival and Christmas periods.
A research has shown that there are categories of animals which are
closely related to human beings, they resembles human beings. The
monkeys and the eaves. They are really man's closets relation. The
genetics make - up of the chimpanzee is more than 90% similar to that
man, so they are very close related animals to man. The baboon, also
from the monkey jungle use to give birth to it's young ones like the
humans use to do. It also treat it's young ones almost exactly like man.
The monkeys use to wave there hands to visitors and make a voiced
abstract sound to show there happiness to the visitors. The animals are
locked in steel cages. Other dangerous animals are also kept inside a
special steel cages locked with special keys and special attention is
kept on them by the authorities so that they cannot make harm to
people.
The zoo is a treasure to be discovered a jewel in the centre of Kano state
