SOCIAL MEDIA YOUNG JOURNALIST’S COMPETITION

The first of its kind event in West Africa, young journalists’ competition, has been marked. The event centred on the impacts as well challenges of the new social media like Facebook, twitter and YouTube on the practice of journalism. 

The programme, organised by Deutsche Welle in partnership with freedom radio and mass communication department, Bayero University Kano, at the CIT hall, new campus. The event had the grace of important personalities like the vice chancellor of the University, Professor A.A Rasheed, and the German ambassador to Nigeria, H. E Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel, among other important personalities.

Addressing the guests, the representative of the German company expressed his excitement on behalf of the team, regarding the level of hospitality they enjoy from Bayero University Kano and freedom radio. He also reiterated his willingness and interest to cement the partnership by making the event an annual one
Professor Abdullahi Uba Adamu, a Professor of cultural anthropology encouraged Africans to use the new media in promoting African culture, instead of the one way flow of information that keeps Africans at the receiving end. He further said the older generation comprising of people from the age of twenty five use the new media for basic information needs than the younger generation who are more experimental.

Mr Thomas Moesch, Head of Africa service Deutsche Welle international, addressed the students and encouraged them to use the new media in a positive way that will improve their academic pursuit, and avoid any communication on the social media that will threaten the security of the country. In his address, he gave kudos to the event coordinated by Mallam Suleiman Yar’adua of mass communication department, freedom radio, and the entire students of Bayero University Kano. The event featured journalistic entries from Mustapha who came third in the essay, Salima Orbunde Jummai the 1st runner up from level three and Shehu Sani also from level three, emerging as the winner with a prize of a laptop and a school bag.
The event showcased a thrilling performance by a Kano grown musical group called K-BOYZ, who are also students of the department, lots of refreshments and eventually rounding off with a vote of thanks by the managing director freedom radio Kano, 99.5 fm.
