A diplomat Mrs. Dorathy
Jenetzke Wenzel says transparent and accountable leadership are the only
solutions to the multiple problems that continued to undermine the progress of
Nigeria.
Mrs. Dorathy Wenzel who is the
German ambassador to Nigeria made the remarks at the young journalist’s
competition sponsored by the embassy and organized by the department of mass
communication Bayero University Kano in collaboration with Freedom Radio Kano.
The ambassador emphasized that
Nigerians must know the activities being undertaking by their leaders and hold
them responsible for their actions.
“If you want your leaders to be
good leaders, you have to know what they are doing, and if the leaders account
for what they are doing to you, it is the first step to have a country where
everybody feels safe”.

She challenged journalists to
focus their searchlight on the leaders and expose corrupt practices for the
betterment of the country.
On the competition, Mrs.
Dorathy Wenzel said it is part of the cordial relationship between Nigeria and
Germany and that more of such partnerships are underway with the university.
In a remark, the managing
director Freedom Radio Kano, Umar Faruk Dalhatu informed the gathering that his
station is currently partnering with Deutchwelle Radio owned by the German
government in the training of its staff.
“Five of our staff have already
benefited from the internship programme ranging from three weeks to six months
and that one of your product working with us Halima Umar is soon going for a
five year contract with the German Radio”.

and Salima Jummai Orbunde who clinched first and second position respectively
expressed appreciation to the organizers and encouraged mass communication
students to always try their luck in such competitions.

The occasion with the theme
challenges of social media was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the
University Professor Abubakar Rashid, the Kano State Commissioner for
Information Dr Umar Farouk, the Head of Department Mass communication Dr
Balarabe Maikaba among other dignitaries.
